Elimination of palm oil through the use of shea butter

The Hügli brand NATUR COMPAGNIE uses organic shea butter and sunflower oil instead of palm oil. The use of organic shea butter actively promotes fair working conditions for African women.

Sunflower oil and organic shea butter

Nature offers us a wealth of raw materials for the production of valuable foods such as edible fats. That is why NATUR COMPAGNIE does not find it difficult at all to do without palm oil, which is cultivated in monocultures worldwide. Instead, NATUR COMPAGNIE uses organic sunflower oil in the fine-grained products such as the sachet soups and fairly traded organic shea butter in pasty products such as the stock cubes.

Shea - Green skin, valuable core. The African butter tree is also called the "tree of life" or "sacred tree". On the shea tree, which can grow up to 20 metres high, green fruits ripen with brown kernels in the middle, the shea nuts. These are shelled, ground and kneaded until high-quality fat - the shea butter - remains.

Fair working conditions for women in Africa

At the same time, the NATUR COMPAGNIE brand can support socially and sustainably in the global south: By sourcing shea butter from Burkina Faso and Ghana in Africa, fair working conditions for women are promoted. By using organic shea butter, local cooperatives are guaranteed a secure purchase quantity. In this way, Hügli and NATUR COMPAGNIE secure the income and livelihood of many African women. Because the collection and sorting of the shea nuts as well as the preparation of the butter is traditionally in the hands of women. This is a good thing, because it gives them the chance of financial independence and self-reliance.
